Reduced Inequalities

Play Proud

Globally, LGBTQ+ communities face discrimination both on and off the pitch. LGBTQ+ discrimination comes in many forms—ranging from homophobic chants in the stands to laws that criminalise LGBTQ+ identities.

Play Proud is a Common Goal LGBTQ+ inclusion project that works with all stakeholders in soccer to create safer spaces for LGBTQ+ communities. Play Proud transforms soccer clubs, community organizations, and supporters groups around the world by equipping coaches and staff with the skills and knowledge to ensure that LGBTQ+ inclusion is championed, on and off the pitch.

Across the world, LGBTQ+ young people and communities face discrimination at all levels of the game. LGBTQ+ youth face higher rates of violence, bullying and harassment. In the US, 4 out of 5 LGBTQ+ youth are not out to their coaches. All too often, LGBTQ+ communities feel like soccer is not a space for them.

Play Proud works with LGBTQ+ inclusion champions at professional clubs, youth serving community organizations, and supporters groups to create positive change in their communities. Each champion commits to 100+ hours of training designed to equip them with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to tackle inclusion challenges in their communities.

Since its launch in 2019, Play Proud has trained champions from 98 professional clubs, community organizations, and fan supporters groups across North America, totaling nearly 100,000 training hours.

Play Proud: The Road to the 2026 Men's World Cup

With the 2026 Men's World Cup on the horizon in North America, Play Proud has been implemented in 11 out of the 16 host cities. With the world coming to North America, Play Proud has created a network of inclusive clubs, community organizations, and supporters groups in an attempt to make this World Cup the most LGBTQ+ inclusive one yet.
